Voting with their feet

It is the third anniversary of the war in Iraq. Over 100,000 people have taken to the streets in Chicago in support of basic human rights. Half a million people demonstrated all over France to demand justice. They were joined by tens of thousands in Spain. There's just one thing that needs to be pointed out: these were NOT about the war.

The one in Chicago? In support of illegal immigrants. France? Hiring practices. Spain? Booze fests.

So where were the mass demonstrations against the war in Iraq. Answer:Nowhere. So if you want to know the American peoples' opinion of this war, this is the most reliable poll available (besides for elections).

Americans have voted with their feet (or lack thereof).

Crowds Smaller But Exuberant

Many of the weekend demonstrations across Australia, Asia and Europe drew smaller-than-anticipated crowds -- far short of the millions worldwide who protested the initial invasion in March 2003 and the first anniversary in 2004.

Only about 200 joined a march Sunday down New York's Fifth Avenue, with signs including: "We the People Need to do More to End the War." Saturday's rally drew more than 1,000 people.

So much for all those polls proclaiming that "support for the war in Iraq has hit new lows" and "the American people are angry about the lies that lead to this war". The next time a newspaper is delivered to your home with the headline screaming "Iraq war support now at 2.5%", please give it the respect it deserves: use it for fishwrap.
